What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile Dysfunction is a sexual disorder when a man faces ongoing frequent issues of getting & keeping erections. It has already been reported that 1 out of 5 men are suffering from sexual disorder and this number becomes higher with the growing age. Men can face several types of problems including poor sexual drive and issues related to ejaculation but erectile dysfunction is being specifically related to the trouble of getting and keeping erections. Although it is not rare for males to face issues with erections from time to time, but when this happens progressively or routinely and sexual intercourse is not normal, then this underlying problem requires medical intervention.

Underlying symptoms
When a person suffers from ED, it becomes so difficult to get hard and sustain a firm erection, sufficient enough for intercourse. When trouble in erections becomes a routine and bothersome issue, it is time to seek the assistance of your healthcare provider. Some research studies have demonstrated that men who are suffering from impotence are at significant risks of getting the cardiac attack, stroke, or circulatory issues in legs.

It can also cause some psychological symptoms that include:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Distress in man & partner
  • Relationship issues

Possible causes of erectile dysfunction/ impotence
It occurs mostly when the blood flow towards the penile region is limited or nerves are harmed. This means some other underlying medical condition can be the cause of this particular sexual disorder.

Psychological cause like stress, or emotional reasons

Physiological causes
The erectile dysfunction can also be the early warning sign of some other, more serious underlying medical condition like atherosclerosis, hardening/ blockage of arteries, cardiac diseases, increased blood pressure or diabetes.

It is extremely important for your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of impotence that will help in determining a further course of action. This is essential for treating your sexual dysfunction and for maintaining overall well-being.

Diagnosis
The doctor first of all has to determine the cause of this particular sexual syndrome that direct for further course of treatment. Diagnosis of ED starts with your doctor asking questions about your health condition, heart, and vascular health and also about erection issues. The physician can also ask you to go for a physical examination, diagnostic tests for determining the root cause of this sexual disorder.

Treatment
Depending upon cause & severity of ED & underlying medical conditions, the doctor will determine the most appropriate course of treatment for the patient. The physician always explains the risks as well as benefits of each treatment and considers your individualized preferences too.

Oral medications
Oral medications are the first line of treatment and highly successful for treating this sexual malfunctioning in men. Few of oral ED medications are:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra)
  • Avanafil (Stendra)

Other therapies for treating impotence in men:

Alprostadil self-injection
A fine needle is used for injecting Alprostadil into the base portion & sides of the penis. Each of the injection is being specifically dosed for developing erections that last not longer than a period of one hour. Since a very thin needle is used for injecting medication, pain at the site is minimal. Few side effects of this treatment include mild bleeding, prolonged erection, and the rare formation of fibrous tissues at the site of injection.

Testosterone replacement
Some people who are suffering from erectile dysfunction might have a complicated level of testosterone hormone. It such a situation, testosterone replacement therapy is being recommended by the specialist. It can either be given as the only therapy or in combination with other treatment options.
